Design

Each creation of our collection is the result of an intense work of choice and selection, among numerous possibilities, of the highest quality fabrics, materials and designs. This work is the expression of the taste and wisdom of our craftsmen and designers. The result is unique products, representatives of the Italian style, which denote maximum attention to detail, stitching and color combinations.

We do not know if the term art can be combined with household linen, but when we design a new product to be included in our collection it is like starting from a blank canvas that takes shape step by step. We start from the choice of the basic texture and then move on to the colors of the finishes and choose from hundreds of possible combinations that we think is perfect to make the product unique.

Choice of fabrics

It all starts with the choice of fabrics, color combinations and accessories. This is the phase in which we imagine the finished product and it is the moment in which creativity is the protagonist.

Every year we participate in the main trade fairs in Italy and abroad to select the best weaving companies. An important appointment is that of "Proposte", held every year in May in Cernobbio, on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy, where the best Italian companies display their collections of fabrics. All fabrics are of the highest quality and it is very difficult to select the ones that will then form our collection.

Some of the fibers contained in the fabrics we choose are shown below. We hope the information shown is of interest to you.

Cotton plant

Cotton

Cotton is a natural cellulosic fiber characterized by being soft and fluffy. It is grown in capsules that grow from the genus of Gossypium seeds, belonging to the Malvaceae family which also includes well-known members such as ocher, cocoa or durian. All cultivated cotton species originate in the subtropical parts of the world and in their natural conditions they can grow up to 6 meters in height. In domestic cotton crops they usually grow from 1 to 2 meters.

After 80-100 days of sowing, the white flowers develop from the plant, change to a reddish color and when fertilized they fall and are replaced with capsules. From this moment it takes 55-80 days to mature and seeds and filaments develop during this period and then develop the cotton fiber which can reach a maximum of 6 cm.

Origins

The origins of cotton are very atheistic. Cotton is believed to have been grown for the first time in the Indus delta. In fact, the first signs of the date of use of cotton were 6,000 BC and were found in India and Pakistan. Gossypium herbaceum and Gossypium arboretum were the first species used in ancient southern Asia. The production then spread to Nubia, Egypt and Mesopotania and in the first century Arab merchants introduced the fiber to Europe bringing cotton products to Italy and Spain. In medieval times, northern Europe also experienced cotton. Almost in the 17th century, the warmer Asian and American regions already cultivated it. It was the industrial revolution, starting in England, that caused a huge increase in cotton production. India was the main supplier until the mid-19th century for European industries, but then the United States overtook it due to a higher quality cotton with a cheaper price. Today's global production is around 25.5 million tons of cotton grain. Cotton is grown in over 100 countries, but India, China and the United States are the main producers representing 60% of total production, Australia and Egypt produce the highest quality cotton. Cotton demand has increased at an annual rate of 2% on average since the 1950s and almost 53% is subsidized.

Polyester

Polyester is an artificial fiber made up of long chain polymers characterized by greater resistance than natural fibers.

This material was discovered in America by DuPont in the 1930s, but it was Carothers, a British company, who created the first commercial polyester fiber in 1941 by continuing the work from DuPont. In 1946 DuPont purchased all of Carothers' legal rights and began marketing it to the American public in 1951.

The specific attributes that make this fiber used worldwide for many products are different. Polyester is stronger and with a better elongation capacity compared to natural fibers. It is a resistant and very durable material and the fibers are light. The fibers can also be easily dyed and maintain the shapes adequately as well as being highly resistant to stains.

Cotton and polyester have different properties and DOMUS tries to combine both fibers to obtain the best properties in each product. Furthermore, depending on the position in which the fabric is used, (top or bottom layer), the type of fiber, pure or mixed, is chosen, taking into account the characteristics that provide the best sensations and offer the best experience.

Our bedding collection uses different fabrics depending on whether it is an upper or lower layer. The part in contact with the skin is 100% cotton. This guarantees softness and delicacy of the natural fiber. The upper fabric is a combination of cotton and polyester. The combination of fibers allows the product to maintain itself better over time.
